CBD and Sleep

Sleep and relaxation.  Two things that are so important for physical and mental health, that so many people struggle with, and that CBD can help to improve or increase. That’s right, not only is CBD great for pain relief and muscle recovery, but it also has been shown to have a positive impact on sleep.

How exactly can CBD help you relax and does it really help you get a better night’s sleep?  Read on for all the details.

The Importance of Sleep

Before getting into that, let’s look at why sleep is so important.  Sleep can have an impact on pretty much every area of your life.  Chronic poor sleep is associated with a variety of negative outcomes.  It has cognitive impacts, causing things like trouble concentrating, lower productivity, and is even linked with depression (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27816065/).  It also has emotional and social impacts: being tired can result in less control over your emotions and withdrawal from social events. It can even impact your physical health, from lowering your athletic performance (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32005349/) to impairing immune function and increasing your risk of heart disease (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26972035/). Basically if you’re not sleeping your best, you’re not living your best.

Sleep and CBD

If you struggle to relax or are frustrated that you can’t seem to get a good night’s sleep, you may want to turn to CBD. While there is still much research to be done, quite a bit of evidence currently exists that suggests the right CBD routine could do wonders for your sleep.

What is one major factor keeping people awake at night?  Anxiety.  Being anxious makes it much harder to fall asleep and to stay asleep for a full night. CBD has a calming effect on the central nervous system, helping to alleviate some of that anxiety. In fact, research has shown a significant decrease in anxiety amongst those who started taking CBD (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6326553/).

There is also evidence to suggest a direct tie between sleep quality and CBD. For those who struggle with insomnia, getting a good night’s sleep may feel impossible.  However, a recent study of individuals with insomnia found that those who began a daily CBD routine were able to sleep longer and also woke up less times throughout the night (https://www.med.upenn.edu/cbti/assets/user-content/documents/s11920-017-0775-9.pdf).

Consuming CBD, especially full-spectrum CBD that contains all parts of the cannabis plant, before bed can help you to unwind and get ready for a good sleep. And even for those who don’t suffer from anxiety or insomnia, better sleep is always beneficial. CBD can help you relax and recover from your day, preparing you for a restful night’s sleep.
